Horror 101 – Episode 80: Suspiria (1977) – October 31st, 2018

Do you know anything about witches?

Welcome to our 80th podcast! Just in time for Halloween! We decided to put our money where our mouth is. After giving strong opinions about the relevance and necessity of Halloween 2018 we went to see it and begin this show with some of our thoughts on the new movie. There will be SPOILERS! And since Luca Guadagnino’s remake of Suspiria will be hitting theatres in a few days there will never be a better time to cover Argento’s fan-favourite original from 1977. This movie has been applauded for decades. It is highly stylized and beautiful to look at but it is not without its flaws. The Nefarious Paul B. joins us once again. Come with us this Halloween as we give a critical treatment to one of the most universally loved genre films in the last 40 years.

Hey guys, enjoy the podcast a lot – just love how passionate you all are about horror movies. But – and I hate to say this – we nearly always disagree, like ALWAYS. No to Suspiria? No to Shivers? Holy crap.

But I had to say that I think you went waaaayyyy easy on Halloween II a couple of weeks back and were totally harsh on Halloween 2018. which is a much better film In my opinion. Well, not just mine, also John Carpenter’s haha just sayin’…

Would love to hear your opinion on some more obscure movies like Frightmare (1974) Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue, House at the End of Time or The Prowler. Have you done Session 19? I might have missed it if you did…

I’m pretty sure we still won’t agree but I’ll still enjoy listening. Thanks guys!

Session 9? Not yet. But the Nefarious Paul B has been trying to get that one going for a while so keep your peepers peeped! Thanks for reaching out. We’re glad you enjoy the show.

Completely agree with you about Suspiria. I loved the music and the visuals but what an otherwise overrated movie.

As for Halloween 2018. It didn’t feel like a horror film with how it was structured and filmed. Thought it was more of a revenge/action film than a horror film- in terms of structure and tone.
