Horror 101 – Episode 81: Pet Sematary (1989)

Horror 101 – Episode 81: Pet Sematary (1989) November 30th, 2018

Sometimes dead is better.

Welcome back to the Horror 101 Podcast. For this 81st show we’re shedding light on one of the scariest films to come out of 1989. In 1983 Stephen King wrote a novel which incorporated a bunch of his personal experiences and wrapped them in a supernatural blanket of evil, violence and despair. By the end of the book he had completely freaked himself out with what he had written and shelved the story but it became a huge best seller anyway. Several years later, Mary Lambert would go on to direct her vision of that story. With a new remake on the horizon and a fantastic ‘making of’ documentary made last year we’ve decided to give the Horror 101 treatment to Pet Sematary.

Horror 101 – Episode 80: Suspiria (1977)

Horror 101 – Episode 80: Suspiria (1977) – October 31st, 2018

Do you know anything about witches?

Welcome to our 80th podcast! Just in time for Halloween! We decided to put our money where our mouth is. After giving strong opinions about the relevance and necessity of Halloween 2018 we went to see it and begin this show with some of our thoughts on the new movie. There will be SPOILERS! And since Luca Guadagnino’s remake of Suspiria will be hitting theatres in a few days there will never be a better time to cover Argento’s fan-favourite original from 1977. This movie has been applauded for decades. It is highly stylized and beautiful to look at but it is not without its flaws. The Nefarious Paul B. joins us once again. Come with us this Halloween as we give a critical treatment to one of the most universally loved genre films in the last 40 years.

Horror 101 – Episode 79: Halloween II (1981)

Horror 101 – Episode 79: Halloween II (1981) – September 29th, 2018

The Nightmare Isn’t Over!

Greetings listeners! Welcome back to the Horror 101 show. After taking a month off we return to weigh in on the upcoming Halloween 2018 film and what its going to mean after its release. Is it enough that Jamie Lee Curtis is coming back to play Laurie Strode and John Carpenter will be making the music? Does it make sense that this new film will be replacing everything thats come after the original 1978 film? Few sequels are as perfect as Halloween II (1981). It begins the moment the original film left off and it is an exceptional film which concluded an excellent story. And with this new film threatening to remove it from the Myers canon its clear our only act of defiance is to give the Horror 101 treatment to Rick Rosenthal’s Part II. We’ll be speaking to long time listener Eugene and getting his thoughts. We’ll spend some time on what we’re expecting from the new movie and retrospecting on Part II. Join us as we defend one of the greatest horror sequels ever made.

Horror 101 – Episode 78: Nightmare (1981)

Horror 101 – Episode 78: Nightmare (1981) – July 31st, 2018

The Dream You Can’t Escape ALIVE!

Greetings Horror Fans! We hope you’re prepared to get sticky and sleazy cause that’s where the Horror 101 train is headed this time around. For episode 78 we’re focusing on one of the most notorious Video Nasty slasher films in the genre. This film was once famous for causing a UK video distributor to go directly to jail (and not pass Go!) for failing to cut certain scenes from the film for its British VHS release. At the height of the Video Nasty purge copies of this movie went for over $100 bucks a pop. The director scandalously accredited the gore effects to maestro Tom Savini, exploiting his name for ticket sales. We’ll discuss how this came to be and introduce you to the real effects artists responsible for the shamelessly excessive violence this movie has to offer. Join us as we jump right into the sleaze of Romano Scavolini’s Nightmare.

They walk. They talk. They kill!

Welcome back to the Horror 101 show! For our 77th episode we’re going back to 1987 and giving some love to another Stuart Gordon/Brian Yuzna collaboration. The Charles Band produced Dolls. Admittedly, this is very light horror but at a scant 77 minutes long, with an excellent cast and one long and stormy night in a supernatural mansion, Dolls is always moving and a lot of fun. We’ll give our take on the recent Halloween trailer and our thoughts on what its going to be like having to remove Halloween II (1981) from the Canon once its released. Join us as we give the Horror 101 treatment to Dolls!

Horror 101 – Episode 76: Videodrome

Horror 101 – Episode 76: Videodrome (1983) – May 31st, 2018

Long live the new Flesh!

For episode 76 the crew each selected a title they wanted to cover and we put it to a vote for our Patrons. Their choice? David Cronenberg’s Videodrome, starring James Woods and Deborah Harry. This is our third time focusing on Cronenberg’s work at the Horror 101 Podcast. Videodrome is a dark and eccentric look at the effects of media on the psyche. When UHF channel 83 station owner Max Renn stumbles upon an ultra-violent pirated satellite video feed he begins a campaign to acquire it for his station. The further he chases down the source, the more his world turns upside down. Join us as we dissect this Canadian horror filled with the bizarre body horror effects Cronenberg is known for, brilliantly displayed by Rick Baker.

Horror 101 – Episode 75: JAWS

Horror 101 – Episode 75: JAWS (1975) – April 30th, 2018

You’ll never go in the water again!

Welcome back to the Horror 101 show. For this 75th milestone show Nood suggested we should cover a classic from 1975, so it was decided. We were going to take a bite out of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. Jaws still stands as an incredible achievement by the then young and enthusiastic Spielberg. It was one of the first summer blockbusters and instantly sparked fear into the hearts of millions who loved to swim in the open ocean. With outstanding performances and the most iconic John Williams’ score, Jaws still stands the test of time more than 40 years after its release. We’ll share our stories with how it affected our lives, focusing on our favorite and no so favorite parts. For this special 75th episode its our privilege to give The Horror 101 treatment to JAWS.

Horror 101 – Episode 74: Dead and Buried (1981)

Horror 101 – Episode 74: Dead and Buried (1981) – March 28th, 2018

It will take your breath away… all of it.

Welcome to the 74th Horror 101 episode. Get out your shit mittens, listeners. We’ve got a stinker coming right at ya! Remember we were hinting at posting a hater show? Inadvertently, this turned out to be one of those. After a listener suggested we revisit this 80s ‘gem’ called Dead and Buried, directed by Gary Sherman we decided to give it a shot and the result was a hilariously scathing review. Contrary to our usual promotion style, this episode is going to bring the anvil down on a film about the undead plaguing a small fishing town called Potter’s Bluff. Join us for our first (mostly) negative review podcast!

Horror 101 – Episode 72: Oculus

Horror 101 – Episode 72: Oculus – January 30th, 2018

You see what it wants you to see!

Welcome to the first Horror 101 podcast of 2018. This time we focus on a newer title that most of the crew hasn’t seen before. Its Mike Flanagan’s Oculus from 2013 starring Rory Cochrane and Dr. Who’s favorite redhead, Karen Gillan. Oculus is an excellent modern horror which relies on atmosphere and terror instead of gore and jump scares. A welcomed break from the usual horror tropes frequently utilized today. This is the story of a brother and sister putting themselves in harms way to vindicate their parents (and themselves) from a dark history perpetuated by a centuries old looking glass that seems Hell bent on destroying the lives of those in proximity to it. Will the pair prove the mirror’s evil power or become the latest victims of it’s malicious trickery?
