Episode 41: Poltergeist – March 29th, 2015

They’re Here!

Welcome back to the Horror 101 show. Every generation has that one film that for some reason, because it fell under the radar both young and old watched it together. And they should NOT have. By the time the film was over the damage was done. No one was sleeping for a very long time. It was whispered about at the playground AND in the work place. And if you were one of the people who watched it at a young age it still freaks you out when you recall it 30 years later. It was that powerful. And we have one of those movies for you this time.

Take the directors of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Jaws, put them together with a frightening Jerry Goldsmith score and ILM special effects and what do you get? You get Poltergeist. Was the film cursed because they used real corpses in the production? How could this frightening film get by with a PG rating? We have 6 podcasters lending a hand on this powerful movie. Join us for another walk down 80s horror memory lane as we give the Horror 101 treatment to Poltergeist.

Horror 101 Podcast – Episode 34: The Sentinel (1977)

Episode XXXIV: The Sentinel – June 11th, 2014

“She was young. She was beautiful. She was next!”

On this 34th podcast the Horror 101 crew highlight a 1977 film by Michael Winner called The Sentinel. Based on the novel by Jeffrey Konvitz, The Sentinel reflects the spirit of Rosemary’s Baby where Armageddon is just around the corner and a hapless, unsuspecting heroine becomes an integral part in the ancient battle of good versus evil. The Sentinel is a who’s who of some of our favorite actors before they became huge stars. A big part of it’s appeal is spotting all the known faces throughout. We’ll discuss it’s similarities to other films but also how it retains it’s own story. We’ll talk about why the director was shunned for using a certain tactic that led to the demise of Tod Browning’s career over 4 decades before. With memorable performances by Chris Sarandon and Burgess Meredith, The Sentinel includes one of the most unnerving haunting sequences ever filmed. It’s a well crafted thriller that deserves to be seen by any fan of religious horror.

Horror 101 Podcast – Episode 33: Kingdom of the Spiders (1977)

Episode XXXIII: Kingdom of the Spiders, May 1st, 2014

“A living, crawling Hell of Earth…”

What happens when you mix Captain Kirk and about 5000 real tarantulas? You Get KINGDOM OF THE SPIDERS. There have been many films about spiders attacking in cinema history but none capture the authentic assault quite like Kingdom. When all the pesticides do away with the spider’s natural food source, there’s only one thing left to do….go for the mammals. This film cleverly utilizes thousands of real tarantulas to simulate a lot of people’s worst nightmare; a massive, unstoppable army of hungry arachnids. We’ll discuss how this film set off our own personal arachnophobia and how it makes all other spider films inferior. What is the message that the movie gives us about our environment and how could anyone allow dozens of tarantulas to crawl all over them for a film? It’s a perfect example of 70s ‘Nature Runs Amok” features in the spirit of The Birds. Get out your bug spray and join us for another Horror 101 show that’s certain to make your skin crawl.

Horror 101 Podcast – Episode 32: The Witchfinder General

Episode XXXII: The Witchfinder General – April 7th, 2014

“There’s lots of screaming when there’s this much at stake…”

Join the Horror 101 team as we visit the 60s to present a very dark film starring Vincent Price. The Witchfinder General is a dramatisation of the real Matthew Hopkins, a 17th century British heretic slayer. In a time when country folk superstition was a powerful factor in politics, men like Hopkins thrived on their fears and many paid a hellish price from the whims of evil men. This is a film laced with savagery and debauchery. We’ll discuss why this is Price’s most severe performance and how him and his director Michael Reeves were always at odds during it’s production. How did a film with such a meager budget become such a sensation and pave the way for the morbid, dour films which followed it’s path in the 70s.
