Episode XXIX: Amityville II: The Possession – Dec. 3rd, 2013

If these walls could talk…they would shriek!

Get ready to have the lines of fact and fiction blurred as we spotlight a frightening 80s horror film that is based on real events. Most people are aware of the sensational Amityville Horror, the story of George and Kathy Lutz and how they fled their home due to it’s demonic haunting in the mid 70s. All evidence points to their story being nothing more than an elaborate hoax yet it became one of the most notorious haunted house films ever made. But the fact is, on November 13th, 1974 six family members were shot and killed while they slept in that famous house in Amityvillle. The only remaining member of the Defeo family, Sonny was convicted of the crime. One of his defense strategies was to try and make the jury believe that an evil spirit commanded him to commit the murders. Amityville II is the story of that family and how it would have been if his demonic tale was true. Join the Horror 101 team as they dissect this Dino De Laurentiis production. We’ll give you facts from the original case, audio and music from the film and by the end of the show we guarantee you’ll agree that Amityville II is by far the most superior horror film in the Amityville series.

Episode 27: Joe Dante’s The Howling

Episode XXVII: Joe Dante’s The Howling – Oct. 1st, 2013

Terror you can sink your teeth into….

One man that showed a lot of class when we met him at Fan Expo was Joe Dante. This was the man that gave us Gremlins when we were kids. He thrilled us with The Burbs and gave us another reason to fear the open water in 1978’s Piranha. In the early 80s there was a rash of lycanthropy horror films. Werewolves were all the rage. Among these monster movie gems was Dante’s The Howling starring Dee Wallace with horror veterans Kevin McCarthy and John Carradine. The Howling was a combination of excellent writing, a strong cast, smart direction and state of the art special effects by many skilled hands, including Rob Bottin and Rick Baker. This is just the film to sink your teeth into. Join us as we celebrate classic 80s werewolf goodness!

Episode 25 – Tourist Trap (including an interview with David Schmoeller)

Episode XXV: Tourist Trap (including an interview with David Schmoeller) – August 20th, 2013

David Schmoeller

Every year young people disappear…

For our 25th show we’re featuring David Schmoeller’s Tourist Trap. A unique, original slasher from the late 70s. After our Maniac show it seemed correct to focus on another horror movie that brings mannequins into the foreground and no other film does that better than Tourist Trap. What would you do if you were trapped by a killer with incredible telekinetic powers? Would you have what it takes to survive or would you end up another tortured mannequin at his disposal? Tourist Trap stars Chuck Connors. It has the stunning Tanya Roberts running around in daisy dukes the whole film. She was a bond girl in the 80s A View to a Kill. It also stars Jocelyn Jones, Jon Van Ness and Robin Sherwood. We were also privileged to get writer/director David Schmoeller on the phone after we watched the film and he gave us a great interview to share with you. He explains how the idea of Tourist Trap originated and what inspired him to make the film. How it almost didn’t get finished. The turmoils of his Crawlspace movie. We’ll also talk about his new film that’s coming out called Little Monsters. Join us for another 45 minute show filled with soundtrack music and audio clips of the scenes we discuss.

Episode 24 – Maniac: Now and Then

Episode XXIV: Maniac and it’s Remake – August 5th, 2013

“I Warned You Not To Go Out Tonight!”

On this show we review William Lustig‘s Maniac and it’s remake made last year, starring Elijah Wood. Maniac (1980) was a controversial slasher which had feminists picketing it for it’s misogynist cruelty and gore. Gene Siskel walked out on the film after only half an hour. It became one of the notorious video nasties. Beneath that sensation lies a clever story of a traumatized boy growing up into a lethal, murderous man. Joe Spinell plays Frank Zito, the killer in the film. His performance is disturbing. The original Maniac was made for well under $100,000 yet it had Caroline Munro starring in it and some of Tom Savini‘s juiciest gore effects ever filmed. We’ll discuss both films. Their high and low points. The comparisons and the contrasts. There’s a twist to this podcast. It’s the first time we view a film that Cash hasn’t seen yet. The educator will become the pupil on this 24th podcast. It’s another solidly packed 45 minute show filled with soundtrack music and audio clips of the scenes we discuss. Join us for Maniac: Then and Now!

Episode 23 – Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer

Episode XXIII: “Yeah…..I killed my Mama.” July 16th, 2013

“He’s not Freddy. He’s not Jason. He’s real…”

In the same vein as our last show, we delve deep into the mind of another twisted real life killer. In 1986, with a meager $100,000 to play with John McNaughton made his first feature film a true story horror movie about a pair of notorious killers that plagued the United States in the 70s and 80s. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is a low key, savage snapshot of the lives of two dangerous men. Walking Dead fans should not let this movie pass. It’s Michael Rooker‘s first performance and you will never look at him the same way again. Mr. Rooker, along with Tom Towles deliver strong, vicious performances that will leave you cold. Join us as we discuss this hidden gem that almost never saw the light of day. Henry was so ahead of it’s time that it helped influence the MPAA to create an NC-17 rating, finally rescuing artistic adult films from the dreaded X rating. It’s a bleak and well crafted road of violence and mayhem.

Episode 22 – Deranged: Confessions of a Necrophile

Episode XXII – Pretty Sally Mae died a very unnatural death! … But the worst hasn’t happened to her yet! – June 27th, 2013

Most people are familiar with Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and how it was inspired by true events. But what many don’t know is, that during that same year in 1974 another picture was released called Deranged which chronicled the life of Ed Gein (through the alternate name Ezra Cobb). Gein was a very real ghoul who dug up over 500 graves and killed at least 2 people. He was the inspiration for Norman Bates, Leatherface and Buffalo Bill. His story is so bizarre and nightmarish that it’s almost impossible to comprehend. Deranged is a very authentic look at that insanity. It was shot in Canada, starring Roberts Blossom. Directed by Alan Ormsby with effects by a very young Tom Savini. The only thing scarier than fiction is the truth. Come with us as we delve into one of the most bent, twisted minds in recent history. We’ll review the film with audio clips and share outrageous stories about how we found the film back in the 90s and how Deranged saved the day when Cash Wampum inadvertently pissed off his idol. Don’t miss this show! Join the Horror 101 team as they present for you Deranged: Confessions of a Necrophile.
